Spring skincare beauty tips – exfoliate to feel reborn

March 19, 2010 – 7:24 pm

I know, my skin hates dramatic climate changes. When I am ready to store my winter clothes, the winter suddenly changed her mind to get away and some fluffy stuff start falling outside, bringing chaos to your mind and skin….

Winter does its best to dry the skin, bringing  indoor heat and outdoor frost. Spring is the best time to exfoliate dry, scaly, rough stressed out face, and body as well. Pay special attention to heels, knees and elbows to feel totally reborn.

For exfoliation, try out all natural products: Kariderm Exfoliating Gel (on sale now). For all skin types but especially for dry, mature and sensitive skin use Cleansing Milk by Dr.Hauschka. Mild and gentle hypoallergenic cleanser Almond Cleansing Lotion by Weleda is perfect for sensitive and reactive skin. For deep but gentle cleanse, use Cleansing Cream by Dr.Hauschka. Clasic Iris Cleansing Lotion by Weleda is ideal for skin cleansing and toning from oily to combination skin.

After winter our skin is especially sensitive. Synthetic fragrance, typically listed as “fragrance” or “perfume,” is the number one reason for allergic reaction.  Also,  it’s better to avoid alcohol ingredients in skin care products— except in spot treatments — as it dries the skin.

Winter Versus Summer Skin Care

February 10, 2010 – 3:52 pm

summer-vs-winterYour skin requires a revolving skin care routine for proper protection from the changing seasonal elements. We seasonally change our clothing to protect it against the changing weather, so no different here.

Skin, as the largest organ, is delicate no only in how it is made up, but in the fact that it covers the entire body. Furthermore, different areas of the skin are thicker than others and some of the thinner areas require additional protections from time to time based on new conditions being introduced. The least in subtlety is how winter versus summer affects skin and its care.

Why is skin care different in winter than in summer months?

Summer months bring heat and humidity whereas winter months are colder and drier. Some of the characteristics of our skin when it is exposed to the harsh winter weather, are becoming excessively dry, irritated and chapped. Of course we attempt to protect our skin with clothing but we often don’t adequately protect our faces. Not being outside isn’t the answer either. Running heaters and dehumidifiers over long periods remove every bit of moisture from the air.

The summer bring its own complications, as the temperature becomes warmer and more bare skin becomes directly exposed to the elements. Humidity and higher temperatures increase the amount of sweat the body produces. This is a natural occurrence in an attempt to cool the body off. Consequently, your skin becomes oilier and more prone to pimples and other irritations. To cool off quickly, find the nearest pool! However, harsh pool chemicals or the ocean’s salt water can lead to excessive dryness.

moisturizeTips for skin care during the winter

Moisturize. There are many ways to do it, so plan ahead and allow yourself many opportunities. As we have mentioned in other articles, buy your favorite moisterizer in some travel size as well. They are normally very inexpensive as companies treat them as promotion samples as well. This allows you to keep them in several places, the car, the office, so you always have it around. You can add moisture to a dry home by turning on a humidifier. If you don’t have one, you can place a pan of water near a radiator or heat source. Remember also, that plants help moisturize the air. Using emollient-based soaps, lotions and creams also provide a great way to add some moisture to your skin..

Take shorter, warmer showers and baths. Hot water strips away natural oils as does staying submerged in water. You may find that using the same soap year round leaves your skin much drier in the winter than it does in the warmer months. Therefore, when the air outside becomes cooler, it might be time to buy a different soap for a few months. It is a great way to mix things up in preparing for the change in season.

Reduce the number of times you apply toner after cleansing. The role of these skin care products are to remove oils. Doing this excessively will dry out the skin even more during these months. Use toners with no or low alcohol levels to reduce the drying effects. You will be able to go back to your normal cleanser in the spring.

Pay more attention to exfoliating during this time. As a skin care regime, using a washcloth or scrub will remove dead skin cells and stimulate the skin for new growth. In the winter this is especially important as you will notice there may be more dead, dry skin hanging around.

Apply sunscreen. That’s right, the sun still exists in the winter! Apply sunscreen regularly when outside because you’re just as likely to sunburn in the winter as you are in summer. Many moisturizers or other make-up contain SPF nowadays. Use a minimum SPF of 15 for suitable protection from the sun. Using a lip balm to protect lips from overdrying and cracking. Women can wear lipstick, some of which is geared toward sun protection as well, which also contains protections by keeping the lips moist. Oh, and stop licking your lips!

seasonsTips for skin care during summer

We are going to pick up where we left off, apply sunscreen. As a skin care commandment applying sunscreen year round limits the effects of ultraviolet radiation. Wearing sun protective clothing and seeking shade whenever possible always helps. Limit your direct sun exposure when it is strongest, which is between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Excessive sweat and oils clog pores. Using a cooling cleanser containing salicylic acid will keep skin blemishes under control. Cleansers made with eucalyptus or menthol extracts feel good and help keep pores clean and open.

Time to change your moisturizing products back. Since skin doesn’t need as much moisturizing protection during summer as it does during winter, you can apply moisterizer less often. Also ready your other skin care products that you apply. Many provide natural moisterizers which may be suitable during the summer.

Rinse your body with cool water after swimming. This will remove any harsh checmicals such as chlorine and if swimming in the ocean, removing any excess salt.

Applying a facial mask once a week will deep-clean pores and help skin retain its natural pH balance. Supplimentally, using a mister will keep skin cool and moist.

Important tip: do it before any face exercises

February 3, 2010 – 3:01 pm

facial-yoga I found out that before doing any facial exercises it’s beneficial to apply water or moisturizer. For better results, I spray water on my face and neck, and when the skin is still slightly wet, apply moisturizer to promote fluid skin movement.

Some simple guidelines to remember when doing facial exercises:

1. When doing exercises for the face start with clean hands and face.

2. Never stretch or pull your skin when you do facial exercises because they can lead to wrinkling.

3. When doing facial exercises use the pads of your fingers, not the tips, to avoid scratching the skin.

4. If you have acne, eczema, sunburn or any other inflammation, you need to choose a special program for appropriate skin issue

Healthy skin during winter

January 29, 2010 – 3:01 pm

winter-skin-pretectionWinter is a fun time with lots of outdoor activities: skiing, skating, playing in the snow or just walking in a beautiful frozen park. It’s easy to forget that cold and wind often result in chapped, sore skin areas and your skin needs an extra protection.

Keeping warm and drinking lots of water will help to improve your skin’s vitality and, above all, using a natural dry skin treatment will keep your skin looking young and fresh.
Don’t let your skin become an unfortunate victim of dryness. Remember that winter weather dries the skin even more than summer sun. Ugh.

If you decide to use a natural dry skin treatment, you can help to heal your skin where it needs help the most and protect it from the harsh winter weather.
The great thing about a natural product is that it won’t dry your skin out further, which is the problem with many top brand items you could pick up in your local beauty store. Natural products mean pure and sumptuously delicious, without the addition of harsh ingredients that strip the skin of its moisture. All Natural Products Online has many great products on winter sale with the very best moisturizing ingredients to nourish and smooth the skin.

Anti-aging yoga: natural facelift with Lion Pose

December 2, 2009 – 12:55 am

One of the best face exercises

In this age of Botox and collagen, there is a growing mass of people looking at healthy alternatives to maintaining youthfulness and beauty without the artificiality of face lifts and injections.

Yoga was developed by adapting the qualities and characteristics found in nature and wildlife into a physical and mental routine. In Sanskrit, simha means “the powerful one,” while asana means “posture” or “pose.” Simhasana, or the lion pose, is a unique yoga posture which focuses on the strength and flexibility of the muscles of the face and neck, helping to firm the facial muscles for a more youthful appearance. It can be stated as an truly anti-aging yoga asana and ts is said to be one of the best face exercises

lion-poseHow to do Lion Pose
Depending on your level of flexibility, this yoga posture can be performed while kneeling, sitting with crossed legs or in the Padmasana or the lotus pose. Sit on a comfortable mat or a folded blanket to protect your knees and hips. Pounce like a lion, moving your body forward as you place your palms with fingers spread on your knees or on the floor in front of your knees if flexibility allows. Open your chest as you tighten your buttocks, tucking your tailbone in. Roar like a lion, opening your mouth and sticking out your tongue. Look up towards the ceiling just with your eyes and roar as you exhale. Release the pose after one full breath, release and repeat 2 or 3 times.

As a variation, you can try to make the “aah” sound as you go into Lion Pose with your tongue out.

A Lion’s Pose for Everyone
Because this yoga posture is traditionally practiced in a seated position on the floor, it can be difficult for those who have trouble getting up and down, those with knee problems or other physical restrictions. Furthermore, because this posture can help restore your natural beauty, you may want to practice the lion pose multiple times throughout the day while going about your regular activities. You can get similar facial benefits by performing the yoga pose while standing. Simply stand with your feet about hip width apart and rest your hands with fingers spread on your upper thighs. Lean forward to perform the posture, following the exact same instructions for the seated pose.

Natural Anti-Flu
In addition to soothing problems such as lock jaw and teeth grinding, the lion pose is thought to help relax the muscles of the neck and jaw, easing the pain of a sore throat and soothing a cough during bouts of cold and flu. This yoga posture can further ease cold and flu symptoms by helping drain the nasal passages and expelling mucus from the lungs during the lion’s roar.
This is an exercise that the face muscles rarely get in the course of our everyday lives.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautions before following any of the asanas from this article and the site. To avoid any problems while doing the asanas, it is advised that you consult a doctor and a yoga instructor. The responsibility lies solely with the reader and not with the site or the writer.

Beware: lead in lipstick

December 1, 2009 – 11:26 pm

lead-in-lipstick

There used to be a time when we thought that lead in lipstick was an urban myth. Women bought bright shades of lipstick and dismissed all notion that this proven neurotoxin, which accumulates in human body over time, is hiding in their favourite red tube.

But then the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics released a report in October of 2007. 61 percent of brand named lipsticks tested contained lead! And of course, none of them listed it as an ingredient.

How’s that for busting the “myth” part of this “urban myth”?

Among the top brands that were found to contain lead where L’Oreal (with L’Oreal Colour Riche “True Red” coming in with a whopping 0.65 particles per million), Cover Girl (Incredifull Lipcolor “Maximum Red” – 0.56 ppm), Christian Dior (Addict Positive Red – 0.28 ppm) and others…

Lead is a proven neurotoxin. It also easily crosses the placenta, making pregnant women and their children especially vulnerable. But how many women stop using their favorite lipstick when they are pregnant?

Health Canada followed up the study with their own tests. The lipsticks in their samples contained levels of lead from 0.079 to 0.84 ppm. One lipstick had 6.3 ppm! Though, naturally, the brand was not disclosed. Go figure.

The Canadian government had the audacity to claim that the amounts were safe. Despite the fact that there is a growing amount of scientific evidence that there is no such thing as safe amount of lead. Because lead builds up over time. It doesn’t disappear. And when it comes to lipstick – women don’t apply it once in their lifetime. Some estimate that women eat about 4 pounds of lipstick in a lifetime.

As “safe” as lead is supposed to be, the acceptable level for candy is 0.1ppm. But there isn’t much regulation for lipstick.

And when somebody tries to regulate it, the big lobby guns come out. Despite passing the full California Senate, a bill that would ban lead in lipstick was defeated in the Assembly Health Committee, caving to the mega pressure from the cosmetics lobby. The swarm of lobbyists and big name executives from the likes of Revlon, Estee Lauder and Johnson & Johnson proved to be too much.

What a brave new world we live in. Where a few dollars here and there trump any health concern. Cause dollars must be so much more important…

So where does it leave the consumer?

Doing our own homework. Searching, sharing information, supporting those who try to do well by us.

Seeking out organic makeup and organic lipstick is a way to protect ourselves, our friends and our kids. Chasing the mighty dollar these companies forgot that their customers are human with biological bodies and health concern. They feel no responsibility towards us, but feel secure that we’ll let it stand and use their products cause we need it.

They are wrong. We value our health more than their over marketed poison tubes. And we know there are better options. Truly organic and natural makeup products are popping up everywhere. It’s just a matter of doing some digging to find the right product. But when it comes to health – digging is worth it.

Organic Makeup and Skin Care — Why?

November 17, 2009 – 8:43 pm

all-natural-products (16)Let’s step back and look at the big picture. Your skin is actually designated as an organ. In fact, it is the largest organ you have. Apart from the obvious (covering and protecting your body) functions, it regulates temperature, excretes waste, and absorbs. Yes. It absorbs things. Like oxygen and nitrogen. And all the things we put on it. Where do you think the creams disappear?

Think about it. It’s a porous absorbent surface. So shouldn’t it matter what it absorbes?

An average woman starts her daily skincare routine by washing her face with some sort of soap, putting a cream, and then layers of concealers, foundations, powders, shadows, liners, lipsticks. At the end of the day all of it is washed off with soaps, and covered with toners, lotions, masks… You know the picture.

The government does not properly regulate the makeup industry. The manufacturers of all these products can put a bunch of harmful chemicals inside.

And they do.

So, when you think you’re covering up some spots, or making your eyes larger, you are actually feeding your body things like: Methyl, propyl, butyl, ethyl paraben, petroleum, synthetic fragrances, synthetic colours…

All these things irritate the skin (not to mention other long term side-effects), making women search for new lotions, new creams, new concealers.

Organic skincare products and organic makeup, or at least natural products, are the only way to escape this never-ending cycle of self poisoning.

So, for starters, next time you buy some kind of make-up, imagine you where to eat it. Just a bit of it. Then read the ingredients. I am pretty sure your next step would be to turn towards the local health store (or shelf) and search for organic makeup.

Unless, of course, you like the taste of petroleum…
